Pediatrics

Pediatric care follows a child from infancy through adolescence, tracking growth and development alongside the treatment of acute and chronic illness.

Pediatric medicine is distinguished by the fact that its patients are changing. A finding that is unremarkable at two years is significant at nine; a treatment appropriate for an adolescent may be wrong for an infant. Visits are structured around that trajectory.

Well-child care establishes a developmental and growth record over time, which is what makes deviations legible when they occur. Immunization is reviewed at each visit against the schedule and the individual child's history.

Adolescent care introduces a separate consideration: the growing role of the patient in their own care, and the confidentiality that supports honest conversation.

Conditions commonly evaluated

  • Well-child and developmental surveillance
  • Common acute childhood illness
  • Asthma and recurrent respiratory symptoms
  • Allergy and atopic conditions
  • Growth and nutrition concerns
  • School and sports participation evaluation
  • Adolescent health and confidential care
  • Chronic conditions requiring long-term follow-up

Care provided

  • Well-child visits across the recommended schedule
  • Growth, development, and behavioral assessment
  • Immunization review and administration
  • Evaluation and treatment of acute illness
  • Ongoing management of chronic pediatric conditions
  • Guidance for families, including second-opinion discussion

At a first visit

  1. Bring your child's immunization record, growth records if available, and any specialist reports from prior care.
  2. For a first visit, allow time to discuss family history, feeding or nutrition, sleep, school, and any developmental questions.
  3. Adolescent patients may be offered part of the visit without a parent present, consistent with New York State law on confidential adolescent care.

Working with other departments

Where a child's care involves rehabilitation, cardiology, or hematology, the pediatrician remains the constant point of contact for the family and holds the developmental record against which specialist findings are read.
