Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is the entry point to the practice for most adult patients. Physicians in this department carry long-term responsibility for a patient's overall health and coordinate the specialist care that follows.

Internists evaluate undifferentiated symptoms, manage chronic disease over years rather than visits, and hold the complete picture of a patient's health when several specialists are involved. The discipline is defined less by a single organ system than by the continuity of the relationship.

In a multidisciplinary group, that continuity has practical consequences. An internist who identifies an abnormal blood count, an unexplained murmur, or a functional limitation can direct the evaluation to the appropriate department and remain responsible for the interpretation of what comes back.

Adult preventive care — screening intervals, immunization history, cardiovascular and metabolic risk assessment — is planned around the individual patient's history rather than applied uniformly.

Conditions commonly evaluated

  • Hypertension and lipid disorders
  • Type 2 diabetes and metabolic conditions
  • Thyroid and endocrine disorders
  • Respiratory conditions including asthma
  • Gastrointestinal and hepatic complaints
  • Fatigue, weight change, and other undifferentiated symptoms
  • Preventive screening and immunization review
  • Preoperative medical evaluation

Care provided

  • Comprehensive initial evaluation and history
  • Ongoing management of chronic conditions
  • Preventive care and age-appropriate screening
  • Interpretation of laboratory and imaging results
  • Medication review and reconciliation
  • Referral to and coordination with specialty departments

At a first visit

  1. A first appointment is scheduled for a longer interval than a follow-up visit, so that a full history can be taken without interruption.
  2. Bring a current medication list including supplements, records of recent laboratory or imaging studies, and the names of any physicians involved in your care.
  3. If you have had care elsewhere, requesting those records in advance allows the visit to begin from what is already known.

Working with other departments

Internal medicine holds the longitudinal record. When a patient is seen in cardiology, hematology, medical oncology, or PM&R, findings return to the internist, who reconciles them against the patient's wider history and adjusts the overall plan.
